Kerala Dessert Recipe – Banana Payasam

Ingredients

  • Banana – 4 nos
  • Coconut pieces – 1 cup
  • Grated coconut – 1 cup
  • Cashewnut – 250 gym
  • Cardamom – 3 to 4 nos
  • Ghee – 4 to 5 tbsp

Method

  • Heat water in a steamer and place the idli mould
  • Then place the bananas one by one.
  • Then we have to steam banana for 10 to 12 minutes
  • Remove the lid and check whether the skin of the banana is starting to split in places.
  • Remove the steamed banana and allow it to cool.
  • Take a bowl, add grated coconut and water.
  • Squeeze them well with your hands.
  • Drain and set aside the thick coconut milk.
  • Again, add squeezed grated coconut and water.
  • Squeeze them well for a few minutes.
  • Drain the thin coconut milk and set it aside.
  • The cooked banana should then be peeled and cut into small pieces before being set aside.
  • Then we have to grind the cooked banana pieces into a fine puree and set it aside.
  • Then crush the cardamom into a fine powder and set aside.
  • Heat ghee in a pan and add coconut pieces.
  • Saute them well for a few minutes.
  • Then add cashew nuts and saute till they become a light golden brown.
  • Drain the fried coconut pieces and cashew nuts,keep aside.
  • Again, use the same pan for making payasam.
  • Add banana puree and saute them well.
  • Then add grated jaggery and mix them well.
  • Then add the thin coconut milk and thoroughly combine.
  • Stir and cook for a few minutes.
  • Now add thick coconut milk and stir them well.
  • Add crushed cardamom and stir them well.
  • Then add fried coconut pieces and cashew nut ,stir them well.
  • Cook for a few minutes.
  • Take the pan off the heat and set it aside.
  • Serve and enjoy the tasty and healthy banana payasam.
