Coconut Shell Idli – Killi Sambar

Ingredients

  • Rice -2 cups
  • Urad dal – 1 cups
  • Salt – 1 or 2 tbsp
  • Oil – 2 or 3 tbsp

Method

  • Take a bowl, add raw rice and water
  • Again, rewash them two to three times.
  • Then soak for two hour.
  • Then we have to take another bowl, add urud dal and water ,
  • Then soak for two hours.
  • After two hours, drain the excess water from the soaked ingredients and keep them aside.
  • Then blend the soaked raw rice and urud dal with a stone grinder into a frothy, thick, smooth batter
  • Then , set aside until four hours for the fermentation process.
  • Heat water in an idli steamer, then place the idli plates .
  • cover and boil them well.
  • Then take a bowl and pour some of the fermented batter into it.
  • Then add some salt and mix them well.
  • Take a half coconut shell and grease it with some oil
  • Then batter is poured into the coconut shell.
  • Then place the coconut shell onto the steamed idli plates one by one.
  • cover and cook for 8 to 9 minutes.
  • Ones done turn off the flame and remove the coconut shell from the steamer.
  • Take a spatula and remove the idli from the coconut shell.
  • Serve and enjoy the tasty coconut shell idli with coconut chutney.

Killi Sambar

Ingredients

  • Toor Dal – 1 cup
  • Onion – 2 nos
  • Shallots – 12 to 13 nos
  • Tomato – 1 nos
  • Tamarind – small ball
  • Dry red chilli – 3 or 4 nos
  • Sambar powder – 1 tbsp
  • Asafoetida powder – 1/2 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tbsp
  • Mustard seed – 1 tsp
  • Fenugreek seed – 1 tsp
  • Salt – 1 or 2 tbsp
  • Oil – 2 or 3 tbsp

Method

  • Firstly, we have to wash and clean the toor dal
  • Then take a pan, add cleaned toor dal and water .
  • Cover and cook them well.
  • Take a bowl, add tamarind and water.
  • Soak for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Remove the lid and check whether the toor dal is cooked or not.
  • Once the toor dal is well cooked
  • Take the pan off the heat and set it aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan .
  • Add mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds.allowing them to splutter
  • Then add dry red chilli and curry leaves .
  • Saute for few seconds.
  • Add chopped shallots and sauté them well.
  • Then sprinkle some salt and sauté them well
  • Then add the chopped tomatoes
  • Saute them till they become soft.
  • Then squeezed and drained the tamarind water ,set them a side.
  • Then add curry powders like sambar powder,asafoetida powder and turmeric powder ,Sauté them well
  • pour the squeezed tamarind water into the curry pan, mix them well.
  • Then add cooked toor dal and combine them well.
  • cover and boil them well.
  • Take the pan off the heat and set it aside.
  • Serve the tasty killi sambar with idli.
