Koottu Curry


  • Elephant foot yam – as required.
  • Brown chickpea – 1/4 kg.
  • Raw banana – 3 nos.
  • Turmeric powder – as required.
  • Chili powder  – as required.
  • Salt – as required.
  • Pepper powder – as required.
  • Garam masala – as required.
  • Mustard – as required.
  • Curry leaves – as required.
  • Coconut oil – as required.
  • Grated coconut – as required.
  • Dried chilies – as required.


  • Clean the chickpea and cook it in water.
  • Clean and cut elephant foot yam and raw banana into small pieces. Cook the two with little water mixed with turmeric powder, chili powder, salt, pepper powder, and salt.
  • Grind coconut on a stone grinder.
  • Mash the cooked elephant foot yam and raw banana. Adjust salt and mix pepper powder and garam masala.
  • Heat oil in a pot, splutter mustard. Sautee in dried chilies, curry leaves. Add in the coconut paste when the color changes add in chili powder. Mix in the cooked elephant foot yam, cooked chickpea, and raw banana. Remove from flame.
  • Kootu curry ready.
