Kerala style elephant yam erissery(chena erissery)


  • Elephant yam -1 medium size
  • Water -1cup
  • Coconut oil-20r 3 tsps

For grinding

  • Red chilli-2 or 3nos
  • Turmeric-1/4 tsp
  • Grated coconut-1 cup
  • Garlic -4or 5
  • Cumin seed-1tsp


  • Oil- 2 or 3 tbsp
  • Pearl onion 3or4 nos
  • Mustard seed-1tsp
  • Curry leaves -2sprig


  •  Take a heavy bottom pan add yam along with little water,coconut oil
  •  Cover the pan and cook till it become soft
  •  Grind together grated coconut,red chilli,cumin seed, garlic, turmeric and salt ,to a smooth
  •  Then we chopped, pearl onion ,red chilli
  •  Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seed ,red chilli ,pearl onion, grated coconut till become
    golden brown in colour.
  •  Take another pan, yam paste and grinded coconut paste and then we add the fried coconut
    and mix well
  •  Cover and cook on low flame for 5 to 10 minutes
  •  Remove the lid and mix well
  •  Serve hot with rice
