Kerala Style Puttu & Kadala Curry – Breakfast Recipe

Ingredients

  • Chickpeas – 1/2 kg
  • Onion 4 nos
  • Shallots – 6 or7 nos
  • Garlic -7 or 8 nos
  • Ginger – 1 nos
  • Curry leaves – 3 or 4 sprigs
  • Tomatoes – 2
  • Green chilli – 4 or 5 nos
  • Coconut slices – 1/2 cup
  • Dry red chilli – 4 or 5 nos
  • Cardamom – 3 nos
  • Cloves – 3 or 4 nos
  • Cinnamon – 1 nos
  • Black pepper – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tbsp
  • Red chilli powder -1 tbsp
  • Coriander powder – 1 tbsp
  • Fennel seed – 1 tsp
  • Cumin seed – 1 tsp
  • Mustard seed – 1 tsp
  • Oil – 3 or 4 tsp
  • Salt – 1 or 2 tsp

Method

  • Firstly we have to rinse brown chickpeas .then soak for 6 hours.
  • Then crush ginger and garlic ,set aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan add shallots and dry red chilli ,fennel seed and cumin seed
  • Add cardamom, star anise, cloves, cinnamon and black pepper.
  • Add grated coconut and roasted them well.
  • Drain soaked chickpeas and set aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan add coconut pieces ,sauce them well.
  • Add crush ginger garlic paste ,saute well
  • Add chop onions and green chilli
  • Then add some curry leaves and saute them well.
  • Add turmeric powder ,coriander powder and red chilli powder ,saute them well
  • Then add chopped tomatoes ,saute till they become soft.
  • Add soaked chickpeas, saute them well.
  • Sprinkle some salt for taste.,saute them well.
  • Pour sufficient amount of water and mix them well.
  • Cover and cook till the chickpeas become well cooked.
  • Grind the roasted ingredients and set aside.
  • Remove the lid and saute them well.
  • Then add roasted grinded masala with water .
  • Saute them well, and cook for 6 to 7 minutes.
  • Remove from fire and set aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan add mustard seed ,and let them splutter.
  • Add dry red chilli and shallots, saute them well.
  • Then add curry leaves ,saute them well
  • Add some red chilli powder and fry them well.
  • Then pour some water and boil them well.
  • Then pour the mixture in to the chickpeas curry pan ,mix them well.
  • Serve the chickpeas curry with rice cake.

Ingredients For Rice cake

  • Rice flour – 2 cup
  • Grated coconut – 1 cup
  • Water – 1 or 2 cups
  • Salt – 1 or 2 tsp

Method

  • Take a bowl add rice flour and salt, mix well
  • Then sprinkle little amount of water and mix with fingers.
  • Then we take a puttu steamer and layer with grated coconut
  • Again we add rice flour mix ,then layer with grated coconut
  • Then again we add rice flour mix
  • Finally we add grated coconut and level it up.
  • Close the puttu kutty and steam well.
  • Heat water in a steamer .
  • Place this mould on top of the steamer .
  • Steam passing through the lid hole
  • shows that the puttu is cooked and ready.
  • Then we detach the mould from the boiling water bath
  • And push the rice cake with a long stick on to a serving plate.
  • Serve the tasty rice cake with chickpeas curry.
