Tasty Kerala Evening Snack – Wheat Appam

Ingredients

  • Wheat – 2 cup
  • Banana – 4 to 5 nos
  • Jaggery – 1 cup
  • Grated coconut – 1 cup
  • Cardamom – 3 to 4 nos
  • Cumin seed – 2 tsp

Method

  • Heat a pan and add jaggery and water.
  • Boil them well till the jaggery is completely melted.
  • Crush the cardamom and set aside.
  • Then remove the boiled jaggery water from heat and set aside.
  • Strained the jaggary water into a strainer and set aside.
  • Heat water in an idli vessel and dip the banana leaves into the hot water.
  • Take a bowl and add wheat flour and grated coconut.
  • Add crushed cardamom, crushed cumin seed and salt.
  • Then add bananas and mix them well.
  • Now we add a little by little amount of jaggery water and mix them well with our fingers.
  • Then make smooth dough,it should not be too thick or loose.
  • Take one sheet of banana leaves and roll it into a cone.
  • Fill the leaf cone with dough,fold the top portion, and set aside.
  • Then repeat the same process.
  • Transfer the filled cones to the idli plates and steam cook for 12 to 15 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Serve the tasty wheat flour snack with tea or coffee.
